from Veronica Luard

My heartfelt condolences to Abdillahi, Halimo and Kamal, as well as Sandra’s sisters and extended family. I first met Sandra in UNICEF NYHQ. First, she was a kind senior colleague who showed me the ropes and later my supervisor. But more importantly, she was a friend with a warm smile and a beautiful soul. Recently, I had a dream that Sandra and I had run into each other, and she invited me back to her place – which turned out to be her parents’ old house in NY. In the dream, we had a lovely chat, and I woke up feeling joyful and comforted by her presence. I will cherish this dream and the memories of our time together. Dear Sandra, rest in peace.

A gentle spirit who is and will be missed

from Hakim Mutlaq

Saddened by the passing of this lovely human being who possessed a gentle demeanor but was always willing to share her expert advice and knowledge as a human resource practitioner in one of the most complex organisations to manage, the United Nations. As a fellow compatriot from Trinidad & Tobago, I was privileged to work alongside Sandra on many challenging HR issues, and to support the senior leadership of the UN on several critical reforms. Sandra was always willing to engage and contribute to the collective good. Thanks Sandra for the invaluable support and advice you provided to me personally during my time in the EOSG, and in the larger service of the UN. May your soul rest in perfect eternal peace.

Ayayo, Every time I think of New York, I think of you. The sound of your voice as we talked for hours about our family, the past, the ones we lost. The way you held space for both laughter and tears, for stories and silence. The long walks, the ice cream, the way you made even the simplest moments feel like something sacred. I was 7, then 17, then 19. And now, I carry you with me in ways I never could have imagined. In the way I trace our family history, in the love I have for stories, for art, for understanding where we come from. I wish I had more time, more walks, more pages turned together. I miss you. Thank you for being a beacon of light. May Allah SWT reunite us all in Jannah, Ameen.

Sandra would be so heartened to see all these wonderful outpourings of love for such a unique and incredible individual. She was everything everybody said about her and so much more. We went to graduate school together, to executive coaching school together and up until one month before she died we worked together. I am so blessed and privileged to have called her my dear friend, my buddy, my learning partner and my "sister". Sandra died like she lived, with dignity, courage, integrity and with a smile on her face. We are all blessed to have had her in our lives. Forever, Nancy (Nancy Raphael)

As one of the previous Deputy Executive Directors of UNICEF, I had the privilege to work with Sandra until I retired at the end of 2004. We also became good friends and we had something unique in common, our attachment to Trinidad and Tobago where my husband Stanley, like Sandra was born and lived until he left for USA in 1968. Sandra had many unique qualities and her impact on the development and guidance on Human Resources training and development was enormous. She had a warm and infectious personality and a very positive impact on everybody she met. Stanley and I send our warm thoughts and prayers to Sandra’s family.

from Karin Sham Poo

My deepest condolences! I knew Sandra for a short time but over many years our paths crossed in UNICEF. She was a good colleague, professional, and thoughtful. This is indeed sad news,
